Behind The Shot With Derrick Buckner

One photographer. One image. The story behind the shot.

A boat stranded on a sand road between palmetto and trees with a utility pole leaning overhead

The photograph shows a boat sitting on a road miles from any water, with a utility pole leaning overhead. I found it by chance while scouting an abandoned phosphate mine, where I planned to photograph the derelict equipment and structures. When I arrived, I learned that someone had bought the property and was actively using it, so I couldn’t get in. Right beside the front gate, off to the side, was this boat.

This was about three weeks after Hurricane Milton came through. I still don’t know whether the storm carried it there, which would be extraordinary, or whether it’s simply a coincidence.

I made the frame on a Pentax 67 II with the SMC 75mm f/2.8 LS on Ilford Delta 100, developed in Adox FX 39 II. I went looking for a derelict site and came home with a different picture than the one I planned.
