The Collective Eye No. 9

In this weekโ€™s image, the photographer said they wanted to show how stylish and somewhat out of time and place the man was, and were surprised to see him in his dress coat and high hat alone on the empty square.

The following comments are direct quotes from our community, shared exactly as they were written. We’re publishing them as a way of showing the range of honest, thoughtful feedback this image received, not as a final verdict, but as a real conversation between photographers looking closely at the same frame.

โ€œI love the timeless feel of this image. Great work from the photographer. Personal I would have done a slight perspective correction to straighten the buildings in the background. A slight Dutch angle can be interesting but it doesnโ€™t seem intentional here. I also love negative space but Iโ€™m not sure the foreground adds anything to the image. I would be interested to hear what others think. Overall bravo!โ€

โ€œThere’s a feeling of disconnectedness due to the distance (my opinion). The thing that makes it feel more distance (and overall less about the man wearing the hat) is that he’s the darkest object in the photograph, making the buidlings in the backtround more important than him. I have no opportunity to engage the photograph as the human elements is too dark to see clearly. The duality of the architecture and his attire adds incongruity–which can be dynamic in itself. Cheers!โ€
