The Collective Eye No. 7

In this weekโ€™s image, I have been leaving this series anonymous, but today is an exception, because the photograph is one of mine, made in Mexico City. I kept coming back to it because I thought it had potential, but in the end I did not think it was strong enough to share on my feed.

The following comments are direct quotes from our community, shared exactly as they were written. We’re publishing them as a way of showing the range of honest, thoughtful feedback this image received, not as a final verdict, but as a real conversation between photographers looking closely at the same frame.

A figure sitting on a bench outside the Museo Jumex in Mexico City, with wide stone steps leading toward them

โ€œI really know nothing in the wider scheme of photography but I would crop in. The stairs and the bloke are awesome. I love the looming nature of the darkness over the small figure and the leading lines.โ€

โ€œGood leading lines of the steps to your subject.โ€

โ€œOur eyes seek out the light foremost. That’s the bottom 1/3 of the photo. Asking us to look into the shadow, not sure what to see. That cut-out into the building’s atrium(?) looks interesting, but too dark. The statues are also interesting, but cannot make them out clearly. I’m left with looking at the person on the left and the leading linees to them. I’m enjoying the differing textures and geometries (matching rectangulart shapes of the granite(?) tiles on the bottom left and how they match the facade of the building.โ€

โ€œBeautiful photoโ€
